This was followed by a speech contest with first, second and final year Japanese students. Following the talk and Q&A session, a speech contest took place wherein first and second year Japanese programme students discussed social issues about their own countries, and final year students gave presentations about Japanese society and culture. The fair was carried out entirely in the Japanese language and an internship opportunity with a member of the Wales Japan Club was offered to the first prize winner. https://hml.cardiff.ac.uk/Play/5403 Wed, 15 Jun 2016 12:40:35 GMT https://hml.cardiff.ac.uk/Play/5403 EU Referendum Debate Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union? The School of Modern Languages hosted a student-led EU Referendum Debate on 22nd 22nd April. The debate was the perfect opportunity for students and staff to hear and weigh up the arguments before making a decision. Being the School of Modern Languages, this issue is particularly relevant to us. What will happen to Erasmus? Will I be able to live/work/study abroad easily? What about integration? Is the real risk staying in? The debate was neutrally chaired by Dr Nick Parsons, lecturer in French Studies and Deputy Head of the School of Modern Languages. REMAIN: Jenny Rathbone, Labour Member of the Welsh Assembly for Cardiff Central. Patrick Osborne, First Year French/Politics, President of Cardiff University Students for Europe. Starting from a set of examples showing translators using paratexts or code-switching to voice reservations about the works they are translating, he explores the similarities between this type of translation and what Dorrit Cohn calls discordant narration. https://hml.cardiff.ac.uk/Play/4304 Thu, 20 Nov 2014 11:37:58 GMT https://hml.cardiff.ac.uk/Play/4304 Positioning Translators Prof. Theo Hermans discusses if translators transmit values along with the foreign texts they translate, it is important to devise ways of reading that will enable us to identify the translators’ presence in their translations. Starting from a set of examples showing translators using paratexts or code-switching to voice reservations about the works they are translating, He explores the similarities between this type of translation and what Dorrit Cohn calls discordant narration. He argues in favour of viewing translation as a form of reported discourse, more particularly what Relevance theory calls echoic (and in some cases ironic) speech, a species of interpretive discourse in which the speaker’s attitude towards the words being reported is relevant. Viewing translation as reported discourse implies that the translated words are embedded in the translator’s reporting discourse. https://hml.cardiff.ac.uk/Play/4303 Thu, 20 Nov 2014 11:19:53 GMT https://hml.cardiff.ac.uk/Play/4303 European Day of Languages: Sounds of Europe MLANG staff and PhD students share readings of poetry from around the world. https://hml.cardiff.ac.uk/Play/4302 Tue, 18 Nov 2014 14:40:13 GMT https://hml.cardiff.ac.uk/Play/4302 International Anti-Conference Pro Parra -
